Celebrating 2 Years of Grapefruit: A Timeless Journey Through Love and Growth
—
by
It’s wild to think that it’s already been two years since Grapefruit dropped. This project wasn’t just another album for me—it was a turning point. It was me stepping deeper into my R&B bag, sharpening my vocal and piano skills, and telling real, personal stories through melodies that still hit just as hard today. At the time, I was fresh out of a tough breakup, navigating the chaos of dating again, and trying to find the strength to open my heart to love once more. Every song became a micro-story of those experiences, and in the process, I fell in love with songwriting in a whole new way.
I wanted Grapefruit to capture the bittersweet nature of love—finding it, losing it, and dealing with all the highs and lows in between. The title itself became a metaphor, not just for love, but for women, relationships, and everything that comes with them. And in an unexpected but fitting twist, the album cover ended up featuring my current girlfriend. She was my muse during that time, and in a spur-of-the-moment creative decision, I asked her for some pictures. One of them stood out immediately, and it felt like the perfect visual to represent the stories I was telling—many of which were about her.
Out of all the songs on Grapefruit, Cupcake Phase is my personal favorite. The way the chord progression winds and spirals made it such a fun track to write melodies for. It constantly keeps you guessing, giving you endless possibilities for where to take the sound. I always describe music in colors, and if you listen closely, this track is bursting with them. Free Time became the standout—it’s the most polished, the most accessible, and the track that people gravitate toward the most. And then there’s My Way, the most vulnerable song on the project, and the one that took the longest to write. It was years in the making because I needed to fully experience the story before I could finish the second verse. Once everything unfolded, it naturally found its way into the album as the perfect closer.
Looking back, Grapefruit has become one of my favorite projects—not just because of the music, but because of what it represents. The production is colorful, the melodies are free, and most importantly, it reminds me of a pivotal time in my life. My voice wasn’t at its strongest then, nor was I at my most polished as a singer, but that’s what made this album so important. It proved to me that I could step beyond just hip-hop and explore a whole new side of my artistry. Now, I don’t feel boxed into one sound—I embrace everything that moves me, whether it’s rap, R&B, or something completely different.
If you haven’t taken a deep dive into Grapefruit yet, now’s the perfect time. Stream it today, experience the journey, and celebrate this milestone with me. And while you’re at it, check out the Grapefruit-inspired merch—we’ve got some fire pieces that I think y’all will love.
